If you’re planning a trip to Tenerife and want to experience the island’s most iconic landscapes all in one unforgettable day, this is the route to take. From historic towns and dramatic coastal cliffs to the lunar landscapes of Teide National Park and a golden sunset in the forested heights of Esperanza, this scenic drive is the ultimate way to explore the soul of the island.
Here’s a full-day itinerary through Icod de los Vinos, Garachico, Buenavista del Norte, Masca, Teide National Park, and a sunset at Mirador de Chipeque—designed for road trippers, photographers, and nature lovers.
Kick off your adventure in the charming town of Icod de los Vinos, home to the legendary Drago Milenario—a thousand-year-old dragon tree that’s one of the most photographed natural landmarks in the Canary Islands. Grab a local breakfast (try the tostada con tomate y jamón) and enjoy a short stroll through the historic center.
Don’t Miss:
Parque del Drago
A quick coffee in the Plaza Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres
Next, drive just 20 minutes down to Garachico, a gorgeous coastal town built on old lava flows. Once destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1706, it’s now one of Tenerife’s prettiest towns, with cobbled streets, natural lava pools (El Caletón), and dramatic ocean views.
Highlights:
Natural swimming pools
Castillo de San Miguel
Old convents and colonial architecture
Continue along the coast to Buenavista del Norte, a peaceful town surrounded by banana plantations and wild ocean cliffs. This is a great spot to slow down before entering the twisty mountain roads.
If you have time, take a quick detour to the Teno Alto area or grab a snack at a local guachinche.
From Buenavista, begin the thrilling climb to Masca, Tenerife’s most legendary mountain village. The road is steep, narrow, and full of hairpin turns—so take your time. The drive itself is part of the adventure.
Once you arrive in Masca, you’ll be treated to stunning views of rugged ravines plunging toward the ocean. It’s worth stopping here for lunch with a view.
Pro Tip: Park at the top and walk down through the village for the best photos.
After Masca, continue the climb toward Teide National Park via Santiago del Teide and Chío. As you gain elevation, the lush forests give way to Mars-like volcanic terrain. Once inside the park, it feels like you’ve landed on another planet.
Must-Stops in Teide National Park:
Roques de García – Iconic rock formations with views of Mt. Teide
Llano de Ucanca – A vast plain that looks like the surface of Mars
Teide Cable Car – (Optional) Take it if you have time and want a view from 3,555m
As the golden hour approaches, start your descent via the TF-24 road through La Esperanza Forest. This route is less crowded than others and offers some of the best sunset views on the island.
Final Stop: Mirador de Chipeque
Located along the Esperanza road, this viewpoint is a favorite among locals and photographers. You’ll be treated to a panoramic view above the clouds, with Mt. Teide silhouetted in the distance and the sea of clouds glowing orange and pink.
Bring a jacket—it gets chilly at sunset!
This road trip is a full-day Tenerife itinerary that gives you a taste of everything the island offers—history, dramatic cliffs, quaint villages, volcanic landscapes, and jaw-dropping views. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, this route will leave you with unforgettable memories and incredible photos.
